Self Starter?

November 9, 2012

Enrolled and finished, after long delays so that I could use the help programs that O’Reilly provided for other projects, an online class in PHP, and the required HTML.  Then I registered two domains.  The one site provides the user with the latitude and longitude of the five nearest highway fatalities.  But that doesn’t weem to be enough to interest the folks who say that they are interested in “slef-starters.”

Loose Keel?

November 9, 2012

Nobody seems to check the keel attachment. Old sailboats, ones with fin keels, are cheap. Reason? the bolts in the bilge are never looked at, And they rust; ever increasing the danger that the keel will become unsealed and the boat will sink.
I now have one, a cheap sail boat, and am replacing the keel bolts. A big job. A very cold front, or the first cold forn of the fall is moving in and I have a three day weekend to do the fiber glass work. The cold might give me more time to work the liquid resin into place. Can’t launch the boat though. I should let the resin stiffen in two stages. Stage one loose fit semi-hard. Stage two: torque bolts squeezing the almost hard resin to seal things up.

What’s up?

“cactusmitch,” Still yields lots of hits, and WordPress is the first. Probably because it’s part of Google.
I have s sailboat now! I’m just about finished with replacing the keel bolts that keep the 600 lbs.keel attached to the hull. The boat, a catalina 22′ is pretty well equipped, But I want a bigger one. The trailer that came with the boat is a peach, two axles, fresh paint, and it can haul a keel boat up to about 30′!

Redistricting in Modern Times

November 28, 2011

One Man; One Vote
Districts drawn for competent effective representative government were needs be compact in times when messages and messengers traveled at the same speed. Nowadays, since the demise of newspapers, some may argue that districts should be formed on the basis of shared views. Facebook friendship districts, if you will. Given the history of and possibilities for even greater skewing of electronic media, I argue that compact districts where word of mouth communication is a realistic alternative or complement to mass media will be essential for America to progress.

New does not work for me.

November 28, 2011

The new WordPress, that is. Being a “self starter” Economic Development Specialist for ECoNA, a collaborative of businesses and governments based in Flagstaff Arizona, is relaxing. I just finished a self started project redistricting Arizona’s congressional representative districts. The independent commission has been stymied by controversy. The commission did contract with a firm that has some ESRI based geographic software that automates the messy process that has been mostly been done behind closed doors by and for the incumbents. My idea was to adopt a scheme that could be the basis for modification according to how new boundaries could be anticipated according to the patterns of growth and decline in Arizona. Using the state flag and suggesting two districts would be better served by choosing two from a slate of candidates is an apparently legal idea that may better serve the citizens who live in urban areas and change residences, but not necessarily political views as the rental markets evolve.

For ECoNA, this week I suggest that the service area be designed to include all or Arizona North of i-40, plus all of Arizona North of the Mogllion rim. Areas that could be in or out are: Payson, and Camp Verde. That Clarkdale is served by train from near Chino valley makes for an interesting decision.

Your an Android Developer, now what?

Clean up the associated web site, clean out the email box, write some kind of monetization program.
Folks will come to understand what a valuable and long lasting service Wayside Memorials is and want to be a part of it, support it and all the associated good works.
Time to get ready.

Ant-s or No ANTs?

By cactusmitch from Flagstaff, AZ on 5/24/2011

3out of 5

Describe Yourself: Advanced

Some GPS stuff I know about: DeLorem, the dongle, Magellan, WALL mart dash mount, POI factory, Google Maps, LG Ally Android phone, Garmin Forerunner 305.

ANT is one of the short range wireless protocols being introduced. I have a Chirp on order from REI for just under $20 and will need to program it before leaving it on the trail somewhere. An open source “Chirp” like thing is what I want, but until then,,, why can’t I have the sales info like specs tell me which models are ANT enabled?

Garmin does aircraft and other big money stuff and has a reputation for not really helping their rec. customers that much. Shame!

On the Ally, my “real” Android test phone, I have seen the goal, a list of nearby Wayside Memorials.

One problem, the database reloads every time an update on the proximity is called for.

More programming needed.

works, but too slow

Programming for Android, without knowing Java is very hard.

Fallacies of Composition…

April 12, 2011

Saying that “What is true for an individual is always true for the group!” is a logical fault that can lead to serious suffering.

An individual at a football game can stand up and see better. If all the spectators at the game stand up, none sees any better.

Another Example:
If an individual of family exercises frugality, and invests wisely in the future, that individual or family will likely get ahead, unless all, or a great many individuals of families choose to exercise the same frugality and investment strategy. The individuals may in fact be worse off within a short period of time.

There are many politicians and news analysts advocating a complete turn around in how America runs itself. Especially, they advocate a “balanced” budget for government operations, expanding on the requirement for individuals or families to maintain a balanced budget. While the budget of the group is not the same as the sum of the individuals’ budgets, such a large fraction of the total economy should be run with better thinking.

Failure to recognize the fallacy in this thinking may bring America to much grief.

America’s economy should be steered towards providing for the population in a sustainable manner. Were energies currently directed towards conflict, diverted to broadening prosperity and education, the world would be better off.
